About This Journey

An Ancient Art in the Altai Mountains

In the far western mountains of Mongolia, where Kazakhstan, Russia and China converge, the Kazakh eagle hunters of Bayan-Ölgii practise one of the oldest and most dramatic traditions in human history — falconry with golden eagles.

You are a guest in their home, learning their stories, sharing their meals, and witnessing the ancient ceremony of the hunt on horseback through snow-blanketed mountains.

The Altai Eagle Festival (March & October) is available on select departures, but our winter tours offer something even more rare: the hunt itself, in its natural environment, with no audience and no performance — only the freezing mountain air, the thunder of hooves, and the magnificent arc of a golden eagle against a steel-grey sky.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Arrival in Ulaanbaatar
Welcome dinner at a private restaurant. Your guide briefs you on the journey ahead — the Altai Mountains, Kazakh culture, and the remote wilderness of western Mongolia. Hotel overnight.
Day 2
Fly to Western Mongolia · Sagsai Sum
Morning flight to Bayan-Ölgii, Mongolia's westernmost province. Meet your Kazakh guide at Ölgii airport. Drive to Sagsai Sum — a remote village nestled in the Altai foothills and home to some of Mongolia's most celebrated eagle hunting families. Settle in and share a traditional Kazakh meal.
Day 3
Mongol Altai Petroglyphs · Altai Tavan Bogd National Park · Baga Türgenii Khürkhree Waterfall
Begin the day at the Mongol Altai petroglyphs — Bronze Age rock carvings depicting deer, hunters, and shamanic figures etched into cliffsides thousands of years ago. Enter Altai Tavan Bogd National Park, one of Mongolia's most spectacular wilderness reserves. Continue to Baga Türgenii Khürkhree — a powerful waterfall crashing through the Altai canyon. Camp in the national park.
Day 4
Altai Tavan Bogd Peaks · Horseback Trek
Mount horses and begin trekking toward the Altai Tavan Bogd peaks — "Five Saints of the Altai" — a cluster of five sacred summits straddling the borders of Mongolia, Russia and China. The ride crosses glacial streams, alpine meadows and moraines with the towering ice peaks growing larger with every hour. High-altitude camp beneath the glaciers.
Day 5
Potanin Glacier · Mount Altai Tavan Bogd
Trek to Potanin Glacier — the longest glacier in Mongolia at over 14km — and approach the base of Khuiten Peak (4,374m), the highest point in Mongolia. The scale of the ice, the silence, and the raw altitude are unlike anything in Central Asia. Photography and rest at the glacier's edge before returning to camp.
Day 6
Tsagaan Gol White River · Khoton & Khurgan Lakes
Ride along the Tsagaan Gol (White River) — a glacier-fed torrent rushing through a broad valley flanked by the Altai ridgeline. Descend to the twin jewels of Khoton and Khurgan Lakes — vast, crystal-clear glacial lakes alive with fish and waterfowl, ringed by Kazakh nomadic camps and snow-capped peaks. Camp by the lakeshore as the Altai glows at sunset.
Day 7
Return to Ölgii City
Drive back to Ölgii city through the sweeping Altai landscape. Visit the local Kazakh craft market for handmade embroidery, eagle hunting accessories, and traditional felt work. Evening in Ölgii — the cultural heart of Kazakh Mongolia. Farewell dinner with your Kazakh guide.
Day 8
Flight to Ulaanbaatar · Farewell Dinner
Morning flight back to Ulaanbaatar. Free afternoon to explore the capital — museums, galleries, cashmere shops, or simply rest. Evening farewell dinner together, celebrating an extraordinary journey through the wildest corner of Mongolia.
