Mongolia is horse country. With 3.5 million horses and 3.3 million people, the horse is woven into every thread of Mongolian identity. To travel Mongolia on horseback is to travel as Mongolians have for three thousand years.

Our horse trekking expeditions take you through the Khangai and Khövsgöl regions — the most strikingly beautiful landscapes in Central Asia. Routes cross alpine meadows, ford glacial rivers, wind through ancient pine forests, and climb ridges with views that reach the horizon.

Horses are matched to rider experience, from complete beginners to advanced riders. Our horseman guides — expert riders by birth — will teach you Mongolian riding style and ensure both your safety and your horse's wellbeing throughout.

Day-by-Day Itinerary
Day 1
Ulaanbaatar — Arrival & Briefing
Arrive in Ulaanbaatar. Your guide meets you at the hotel for an evening briefing — route overview, riding assessment, and gear check. Dinner together to set the spirit of the journey ahead.
Day 2
Drive to Mini Gobi
Depart Ulaanbaatar and drive south into the striking landscape of the "Mini Gobi" — a dramatic stretch of sand dunes, rocky outcrops and wide open steppe that captures the essence of the Gobi without the long journey south. Overnight camp in the desert landscape.
Day 3
Tövkhön Monastery · Orkhon Waterfall
Drive west into the Khangai region. Visit Tövkhön Monastery — a sacred hermitage perched on a pine-forested volcanic peak, founded by the great Zanabazar in 1651. Continue to the thundering Orkhon Waterfall, one of Mongolia's most dramatic natural spectacles. Camp beside the Orkhon River.
Day 4
Ride to Eight Lakes — Day 1
Mount your horses and begin the multi-day ride toward the Eight Lakes (Naiman Nuur) — a cluster of stunning volcanic crater lakes nestled in the Khangai Mountains. The first day's ride crosses open meadows and river valleys, with the mountains gradually closing in around you. Camp in the highlands.
Day 5
Eight Lakes — Day 2 · Deep Riding
A full day on horseback exploring the Eight Lakes area. Each lake has its own character — some mirror the sky in perfect stillness, others shimmer with mineral colour. Ride the ridgelines between them for sweeping panoramic views of the volcanic Khangai range. Wild camp by the water.
Day 6
Eight Lakes — Day 3 · Return Ride Begins
Begin the return journey on horseback, descending from the highland lakes back through the Khangai foothills. The landscape opens into broad river valleys dotted with nomadic summer camps. Stop to share tea with a local herder family. Camp on the open steppe as the sun sets over the mountains.
Day 7
Eight Lakes — Day 4 · Final Ride
The final day in the saddle — savour every stride. The morning ride brings a long, open gallop across the grasslands before reaching the end of the horse trail. A traditional farewell ceremony with your horsemen guides. The horses are released to graze freely as you make camp one last time under the stars.
Day 8
Kharkhorin City · Kharkhorin Museum
Drive to Kharkhorin — the site of the ancient Mongol capital, Karakorum. Visit the outstanding Kharkhorin Museum, which brings the glory of the 13th century empire to life through artefacts, maps and immersive displays. Explore the surrounding ruins and the nearby Erdene Zuu Monastery walls. Overnight in Kharkhorin.
Day 9
Return to Ulaanbaatar
Scenic drive back to Ulaanbaatar through the rolling Mongolian steppe. Arrive in the capital by late afternoon. Farewell dinner with your guide — a celebration of an extraordinary on horseback through the heart of Mongolia.
